I resolve to intensely promote the field of global public health this year. I will find more ways to incorporate global health research and discussions into my everyday work and play. I will maintain my global health blog, attend two global health conferences this year, and donate to Partners in Health. PIH is one of the most respected global health organizations because it seeks to address the economic, political, social, and cultural factors that determine the root causes of why a population becomes afflicted with an illness. PIH takes the long and difficult path to address the structural factors — education, housing, nutrition, equality, violence — that affects the ability of a population to maintain a sustainable health care system. PIH understands that simply dumping medicines and other quick-fixes into developing countries does not address the fundamental reasons behind a population’s susceptibility to disease.
