This year, I am going to practice “systematic neglect” a term which Robert K. Greenleaf used to mean: choosing what not to take on so one can be more effective in the areas in which they do focus their energy.

Though I deeply want to  help young people “to develop self awareness, self confidence and self leadership skills” (borrowed from Lorraine Calland- thank you!), my resolution is to practice systematic neglect so that I can be more present and focused as a leader who “walks the walk” (thank you Shannon!).

At home, I resolve to listen more and scream less; to teach my kids to be charitable and kind; to practice the patience I preach. At work I resolve to write columns that make people think and act, telling powerful stories that take me and readers out of our comfort zones. (Got ideas? Send ‘em my way: myant@phillynews.com)
